Cinco De Mayo Cancelled In Chicago Over Gang Violence

(PrimeChronicle.org) – The yearly Cinco de Mayo parade in Chicago has been canceled out of “an abundance of caution” as gang violence spikes in the area. The news came just after the parade festivities had been set up and festivalgoers were forced by police orders to pack up and go home. Organizers and local leadership approved of the move.

The Democrat-run city has seen crime surge so severely that the federal government has taken notice. In April The U.S. Justice Department announced plans to combat crime in the city. The US Attorney General visited Chicago to announce a $78 million grant being given to the city from the federal government. Garland insisted that crime across America is actually down 13% and that Chicago has seen a 13% reduction in homicides. Garland did however warn that these gains could be easily lost if actions are not taken to keep crime down. In a statement, officials from the Chicago Police Department showed that homicides in the city dropped five percent from January through March of 2024.

Over one weekend in May 2024, thirty-one people were shot and six were killed as a result of separate instances of explosive violence in the city. One man was shot in the legs and chest and later succumbed to his wounds. A man and woman were shot in the legs and rushed to the hospital. A man who had been killed by gunfire was discovered in his car. In yet an additional shooting a man was found dead on a sidewalk. No one is in custody for any of these shootings and law enforcement has not announced any suspects.

The deadly violence is not limited to pedestrians, law enforcement has also been the target of Chicago crime. In April, a number of police vehicles were broken into. The police described the suspect as driving a black van. Police did not announce what items had been stolen from the police vehicles.
