A Citibank security guard stopped a gunman within minutes at a crowded Tampa-area campus after a woman was fatally shot, according to local authorities.

Story Snapshot

  • Guard engaged and killed the gunman within minutes of first 911 calls, officials said.
  • About 3,200 employees were on the campus during the attack, raising the stakes.
  • Deputies reported one woman killed, four people injured, and the suspect dead.
  • Sheriff said the gunman targeted a Citibank worker amid a dispute over a $2,500 debt.

Rapid Intervention Amid a Packed Workplace

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said multiple 911 calls began at 12:11 p.m. at the Citibank campus in Brandon. By about 12:15 p.m., a Citibank security guard confronted the gunman in the cafeteria and fatally shot him, ending the threat, according to a briefing carried by local outlets. Authorities said roughly 3,200 people were on site at the time, which made the swift intervention critical for safety on the large corporate property.

Deputies described a chaotic start to the incident. Reports said the suspect arrived by vehicle, entered the grounds with a rifle, and fatally shot a woman before moving toward a cafeteria area, where the exchange with the guard occurred. Officials said four other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the campus was secured after a large law enforcement response and a building-by-building sweep.

Scale of Law Enforcement Response

The Sheriff’s Office deployed hundreds of deputies and specialized teams to the scene, reflecting the size of the campus and the risk to workers and visitors. One report counted 367 deputies responding and said the building was cleared within about two and a half hours, which is a large and fast mobilization for a private office complex. The scale shows how local agencies now train for active threats and move quickly to end danger and account for people.

Authorities set up reunification and managed evacuations while investigators processed the scene. Officials cautioned that some details would be held back while the investigation continued. That included specifics about the four injuries, which were described as non-life-threatening without a public breakdown of cause or treatment. Such limits are common in the first day of a major case and often change as detectives confirm facts and notify families.

Targeting, Motive, and Reported Debt Dispute

Hillsborough County officials later described the shooting as targeted. A local briefing said the suspect killed a Citibank worker and then was shot by the guard who engaged him on campus. A separate report from the region cited the Sheriff’s Office stating the attack tied back to a dispute over a $2,500 debt, which investigators said was owed to the bank, sharpening the picture of motive in this case. That focus differs from indiscriminate attacks often seen in active-shooter events.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) data show that armed intervention by law enforcement or security does end some active-shooter incidents, but it is not the most common outcome. In a recent review year, about one in five attackers were killed by law enforcement or security personnel, while others were arrested or died by suicide. The Tampa case aligns with the subset where on-site security engaged quickly, which can limit harm when many people are present.
